RV Travel Tips for the Holiday Season
Travel is a staple of the holiday season for many, whether that means piling in the car and driving an hour to Grandma’s house or booking a plane ticket to go across the country to visit your far-flung siblings. But planes and hotels are expensive and your relatives’ houses can be crowded, and sometimes you may just want to get out of town with your immediate family on relaxing trip during winter break. So why not pack up your RV and use it as your combination transport & accommodations for all of your holiday traveling needs?
If you’re planning on using your RV to visit family and friends this winter, or if you simply want to go on a trip for fun, you’ll want to be ready for everything this high-stress season can bring. Here are some great tips for successful RV travel over the holidays, courtesy of the staff here at Razorback Camper Sales in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Determine Where You’ll Go
Your camper is your ticket to holiday fun and makes it possible to travel 100 or 1000 miles in total comfort and security. You’ll want to figure out where you’re going, whether that’s to visit relatives and friends, to stay at a campground or to stop at an interesting tourist attraction. Plot out your route and be mindful of variances in weather patterns, since you may encounter blizzards and freezing temperatures.
Put Up Some Decorations
Nothing puts you in the holiday spirit like festive decorations! With an RV, you’ll need to think smaller and also flame-resistant and travel-friendly, which means avoiding open flames, glass and anything bulky. A real, full-sized Douglas fir is probably not going to work as a Christmas centerpiece in your camper, but a smaller artificial tree with fiber-optic or LED lights would work very nicely on a tabletop or in a corner.
String lights can easily be tacked up around your RV, and paper garlands are simple and lightweight. Buy some construction paper and get the kids to help you cut out paper snowflakes, trees, turkeys, pumpkins, dreidels or any other fun and thematic shapes to tape up everywhere. Swap out your standard linens for festive curtains, patterned towels, embroidered throw pillows and printed fleece blankets. Add some LED candles for mood lighting. You can even tack up whimsical signs and set up some simple lawn ornaments when you’re at a campsite.
Plan Out Meals
Good food is essential to pretty much any holiday gathering, no matter your religion or what you’re celebrating. Because you’re going to be working with a smaller kitchen, you may need to scale back on more traditional and grandiose dinners. Instead of a big ham or turkey, you could cook a chicken. Make one-dish casseroles to use up fewer dishes. Or see if you can participate in a campground potluck where everybody brings something to the table.
RVer Gift-Giving
No doubt you have a lot of friends who are into the RV life, including some who live in their rigs full-time. When it comes time to give them presents this season, or even just for their birthdays, you’ll want to think compact and useful. Gift cards for restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores and camping stores will always come in handy for those on the road. Food or toiletries are easy to use up and always welcome, too. A small houseplant may also be a welcome green addition to their RVs. Bear in mind that your full-timer friends won’t have much space for knick-knacks and large or bulky items, so try to think travel-friendly and go minimalist wherever you can when you shop for them.
